UNICEF and States Collaborate to Combat Child Malnutrition

UNICEF, along with the Enugu State Ministry of Health and the Benue State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA), conducted a two-day joint inception planning meeting in Awka, Anambra State, aimed at preventing malnutrition among children during their first 1,000 days of life. This critical period spans from nine months of pregnancy until the child is two years old.

Mr. Juliet Chiluw, UNICEF Chief Field Officer in Enugu, described the meeting as a significant milestone in the partnership between UNICEF and the state governments of Enugu and Benue.

The initiative focuses on providing necessary support to pregnant women and ensuring children receive essential vaccinations and nutritious food. Dr.

Ifeyinwa Ani Osheku, Executive Secretary of SPHCDA in Enugu State, opened the meeting, highlighting alarming statistics regarding child stunting and the multifaceted factors contributing to malnutrition. The program aims to empower women and improve family nutrition, addressing both immediate health needs and long-term developmental outcomes.
