UNICEF Advocates for Girls' Education in Nigeria

UNICEF has called on Nigerian leaders to prioritize girls' education to address high levels of poverty in the country. During a media briefing in Yola, Adamawa State, Nazhat Rafiqu, Chief of UNICEF's Bauchi Field Office, emphasized the critical role of educating women in national development.

She noted that cultural norms and traditions often hinder girls' access to education. Rafiqu stated that education is a right for every child, regardless of their background, and cannot be delayed.

In collaboration with the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) initiative and the Adamawa State government, UNICEF is implementing a 16-month project aimed at improving educational outcomes for vulnerable children. Abdulrahman Ardo, a UNICEF education specialist, disclosed that the project will train 100 school teachers in climate change disaster management and risk control, and it aims to train 253,000 students across Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states, commencing in September 2024 and expected to conclude by December 2027.
