U.S. Embassy in Abuja Closes Amid Protest Fears

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja announced a temporary closure due to potential protests in Nigeria's capital, citing security concerns.

The embassy will remain closed for routine business until Monday, March 9, 2026. Visa appointments originally scheduled for March 4 and 5 have been rescheduled for the following week.

American citizen services appointments set for March 5 are also affected, with applicants advised to check their emails for new appointment dates. The embassy further instructed visa applicants who do not receive new appointment notifications to seek assistance through the visa navigation platform.

The closure follows similar cancellations of visa appointments on March 4 due to concerns over planned demonstrations by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, expressing solidarity with Iran following the reported death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to an alleged U.S.-Israeli airstrike.
