U.S. Embassy in Abuja Suspends Visa Appointments

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja announced the suspension of visa appointments, as communicated through its official social media account on Thursday.

The embassy did not provide a reason for the suspension or specify how long it would last, advising applicants to check their emails for updates. However, it clarified that visa operations at the U.S.

Consulate General in Lagos would continue to remain active. Additionally, American citizen services are available for emergency appointments.

Earlier reports indicated that the U.S. Department of State authorized non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave the U.S.

Embassy in Abuja. The advisory, effective from April 8, 2026, urged Americans to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest, classifying the overall travel advisory for Nigeria at level 3 (reconsider travel) and level 4 (do not travel) for specific states, including Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba, totaling 23 states where travel is strongly discouraged.
