Fuel Prices in Nigeria Unlikely to Drop Soon, Experts Say

Experts caution that Nigerians should not expect an immediate reduction in petrol prices despite a decrease in Brent crude oil prices to $87 per barrel. Dr.

Ayodele Oni, an oil and gas expert, emphasizes that the relationship between international crude oil prices and domestic fuel prices is complex, particularly in Nigeria's deregulated petroleum market. Current petrol prices in Nigeria range from N1,290 to N1,350 per liter, significantly above the N700 per liter recorded in February.

Although Brent crude has fallen from earlier highs, it remains above levels seen before recent conflicts. Professor Dayo Ayoad notes that several factors, including exchange rates and transportation costs, heavily influence retail fuel prices.

The naira's pressure against the dollar and the costs associated with refining and distribution play crucial roles in determining pump prices. Until a formal agreement is reached regarding U.S.-Iran tensions, market uncertainty will persist, impacting fuel prices in Nigeria.
