US DHS Proposes Shortening Student and Journalist Visa Validity, Higher Education Leaders Criticize

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed shortening the validity of student and journalist visas, sparking criticism from higher education leaders. The new rule would cap F visa validity for foreign students at a maximum of four years, potentially disrupting academic programs.

International journalists' visas would be restricted to 240 days with a single extension possibility. Critics argue that these restrictions could harm the US's global academic reputation.

Miriam Feldblum, President and CEO of the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, warned of potential damage. The proposal also includes additional security checks for visa extensions.
