NAFDAC Ensures Quality Checks on US-Nigeria Medical Supplies

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has assured Nigerians that medicines and vaccines supplied under the US-Nigeria health cooperation agreement will undergo quality and safety checks. Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, stated that the agency will monitor the distribution of these medical products through a technology-driven tracking system.
This initiative aims to address shortages of HIV/AIDS commodities following the exit of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Adeyeye explained that products manufactured in the United States and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may receive expedited regulatory approval.
However, products not made in the US will undergo thorough testing for quality, safety, and efficacy by NAFDAC. The agency will also deploy its GS1 technology-driven Track and Trace system to monitor the distribution of all medical products supplied under the agreement, similar to its monitoring of COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic.
