Experts Urge Nigeria to Strengthen Security Post-US Troop Withdrawal

Experts have called on the Nigerian government to enhance its security architecture in light of the recent withdrawal of additional US troops deployed to counter terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin. Gen Dagvin Anderson of the US Air Force Africa confirmed the troop withdrawal during a virtual briefing at the African Chief Defense Conference.

While some analysts express concern that this withdrawal may weaken Nigeria's counter-terrorism efforts, others argue that the country must take ownership of its security challenges. Kabir Adamu, managing director of Beacon Security Intelligence, emphasized the importance of developing a consistent counter-terror strategy, while Auwal Musa of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre urged Nigerians not to panic but to focus on tackling insurgency and banditry.

Musa stated that the absence of foreign military presence should not substitute for strong national security institutions. The US continues to provide strategic support and intelligence sharing, which remains crucial for Nigeria's security landscape.
