Utomi Accuses INEC, APC of Undermining Opposition Ahead of 2027

Pat Utomi, a political economist and public affairs analyst, alongside a coalition, has raised alarms regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly plotting to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group reacted to INEC's decision to withdraw recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which includes figures like David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola.

Utomi described this development as a serious threat to Nigeria's democratic system, signaling a coordinated assault on democracy reminiscent of the regime of former head of state Sani Abacha. The coalition expressed concerns that INEC's actions, based on a court appeal order, contradict the recognition of the ADC's leadership structure and could disenfranchise credible presidential aspirants.

They plan to organize nationwide rallies and town hall meetings starting April 9, culminating in a national gathering in Abuja on April 27, calling for the resignation of the current INEC leadership and comprehensive electoral reforms to ensure free and fair elections in 2027.
