Akwa Ibom's Gov Eno Initiates Flood Master-Plan Review

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has directed a consultant to review and update Uyo's urban drainage and flood master-plan in response to rising flooding incidents. Commissioner for Environment, Nsikak Ekong, announced this during a Ministerial press briefing, emphasizing that the review aims to provide long-term solutions to the persistent flooding exacerbated by urbanization and climate change.

Ekong highlighted that human factors, such as blocked drains, along with rapid urbanization, have intensified flooding issues. The state is also developing a Climate Change Policy and collaborating with the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on legislation for climate action.

An environmental response team, the 'Clean Akwa Ibom Brigade,' will be established to monitor flood-prone areas. Additionally, the government is working on waste management strategies, including converting waste into energy, with consultations from companies in India and the US.

The initiative aims to create employment opportunities and promote environmental education in schools.
