Understanding Kidnapping Dynamics in North-West Nigeria

Kidnapping has escalated into a major security and economic challenge in North-West Nigeria, with the region becoming a focal point for the country's kidnapping economy. Between January and July 2026, there were at least 3,407 abductions in approximately 1,000 reported incidents across Nigeria, with the North-West accounting for 496 incidents and 1,287 victims.

The kidnapping economy includes various forms, notably Kidnapping-for-Ransom (K4R) and Kidnapping for Safe-passage (K4SP). The complexity of the issue extends beyond the abductors to include a network of facilitators, negotiators, and beneficiaries, which sustains the crime.

Nextier’s Nigeria Violent Conflicts Database documented that kidnapping remained volatile, with monthly fluctuations in victim numbers, peaking at 1,060 in February before declining and rising again in subsequent months. Understanding the relationships and financial flows within this network is crucial for developing effective government interventions to disrupt the kidnapping economy.
