EFCC and Police Form Committee to Combat Power Asset Vandalism

On 17 September 2026, the Federal Government announced the formation of a committee to monitor and protect critical power assets from vandalism. This committee includes the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Minister of Power Olasunkanmi Tegbe revealed this plan while commissioning a three-megawatt solar hybrid power project in Abuja. He emphasized that vandalism would be treated as a criminal offense and highlighted the need for public awareness regarding the issue.

Additionally, over 300 students from 15 universities have been trained to monitor these assets, with plans to integrate them into distribution, generation, or transmission companies after graduation. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Renewable Energy Agency, stated that the Energising Education Programme has provided renewable energy infrastructure to 22 federal universities and three teaching hospitals, delivering over 100 megawatts of clean energy.

Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi of Yakubu Gowon University underscored the importance of reliable power for effective learning and research.
