Nigeria's Power Sector Faces Theft and Vandalism Crisis

The Nigerian power sector is currently experiencing significant issues due to theft and vandalism of critical infrastructure, including transformers and power-line cables. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe has expressed concern over this situation and has called on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to intensify its efforts against vandals targeting power installations.

In a meeting with Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, they discussed the widespread energy theft and destruction of electrical equipment, which are major barriers to reliable power supply in Nigeria. Both parties agreed on the need for stronger tactical collaboration to protect the national grid.

The ongoing criminal activities not only disrupt power supply for citizens but also pose a serious threat to the economy, leading to factory shutdowns and job losses. The Transmission Company of Nigeria reports annual losses in billions of Naira due to these acts of sabotage.

Tegbe emphasized the importance of community involvement in providing intelligence to security agencies to combat this issue effectively.
