Nigerian Ports Authority Reports 42.5% Rise in Vehicle Imports

In the first half of 2026, vehicle imports in Nigeria increased by 42.5%, with a total of 103,375 units handled at various ports, compared to 72,568 units in the same period of 2025. Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), announced this during a quarterly meeting of the Port Consultative Council in Lagos.
He was represented by Mrs Okenwa Igwebuike, Principal Manager, Statistics. The increase is attributed to the reduction in levies on imported vehicles and significant transshipment activity at the Ports & Terminal Multiservice Limited Terminal on Tin Can Island Port.
Additionally, vessel calls at Nigerian ports rose to 2,152, a 6.9% increase, while gross registered earnings climbed to 96,693,108 from 79,981,595, marking a 20.9% rise. Total cargo throughput reached 68,294,210 metric tons, up 12.2% from the previous year.
Lekki Port saw a 48.4% increase in vessel calls, largely due to operations at the Dangote Refinery.
