Doctors Shield Patient During Earthquake in Japan Hospital

On July 28, a powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan, while four surgeries were underway at Kumamoto General Hospital. Newly released security camera footage reveals the dramatic response of medical staff, who shielded a patient on the operating table as the theatre shook violently.

The video shows medical equipment swaying and lights flickering, with two medical workers using their bodies to protect the patient while others attempted to secure equipment and maintain order. One staff member was thrown to the floor during the chaos, and another opened a door to ensure an evacuation route remained accessible.

Despite the earthquake's intensity, which was initially reported as having a magnitude of 7.1, the medical team successfully completed all surgeries. Following the earthquake, the hospital suspended some services but resumed normal outpatient operations on August 5.
