US Embassy in Abuja to Remain Operational Amid Visa Changes

The United States Mission in Nigeria clarified that the ongoing realignment of routine visa processing in Africa will not impact the operational status of the US Embassy in Abuja. This clarification follows the United States Department of State's announcement that, effective August 1, 2026, routine visa services in Abuja will be realigned to a regional visa hub.

The US Mission stated that this change pertains solely to routine visa processing and will not lead to the embassy's closure. The Department of State's notice, published on July 15, indicated that this realignment aims to enhance national security, improve efficiency, and standardize screening and adjudication processes across Africa.

Affected countries, including Nigeria, will need to schedule appointments and pay visa fees at designated regional hubs, with Lagos identified as one such hub. The realignment encompasses all routine visa services, including both nonimmigrant and immigrant visas, but will not affect currently valid visas.
