The US Department of State has released an official breakdown of the timeline for obtaining a US passport in 2026, indicating that the entire process takes between eight to ten weeks under standard conditions. This process is divided into three stages.

The first stage involves mailing the application to the relevant passport agency, which can take up to two weeks. Applicants have the option to pay for faster delivery at the time of submission.

The second stage is the processing of the application by a passport agency officer, which typically takes four to six weeks. For those needing their passport sooner, expedited service is available for an additional fee of $60, although no specific timeline for expedited processing is provided.

The final stage is the return delivery of the completed passport, which may take an additional two weeks. A paid option for 1- to 3-day return delivery is also available.
