WAS Urges U.S. to Lift Ban on Nigerian Smoked Catfish

The World Aquaculture Society (WAS) has urged for diplomatic intervention to lift the United States' restriction on Nigerian smoked catfish exports, a ban that has been in effect since 2018. Olarenwaju Badmus, the global director of WAS and CEO of Aquaglobal Inter Solutions, made this appeal during a meeting with Lateef Kayode Are, Nigeria's ambassador to the United States, in Washington.
The ban, imposed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), affects Nigeria’s smoked catfish (siluriformes) and all fish products, resulting in an estimated annual loss of about N576 million ($1.6 million) for Nigeria. This restriction has significantly impacted thousands of fish farmers, processors, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) within the aquaculture value chain.
Badmus emphasized the need for U.S. regulators to engage with Nigerian authorities to establish a compliance structure that would facilitate the reopening of the market, which is crucial for protecting livelihoods and enhancing regional food security.
