South Africans Protest Against Foreign Nationals in Durban

On Wednesday, a protest occurred in Durban, South Africa, where hundreds of South Africans demonstrated against the presence of foreign nationals, specifically targeting Nigerians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, and Mexicans. The protest was fueled by rising unemployment, currently at around 32%, and economic hardship, leading to accusations that foreigners are taking jobs and increasing crime rates.

Herman Mashaba, a leader during the protest, expressed that the situation is unacceptable and that the government is allowing the country to be flooded with foreigners. The protest turned violent as police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd, which had become tense and aggressive.

Elderly resident Themba Dlamini, 81, voiced her frustration over the state of the country, citing issues like bribery and illegal drug trade. The protest highlighted ongoing xenophobic tensions in South Africa, reminiscent of past incidents targeting African migrants.
