Experts Warn of Earthquake Risks in Major Nigerian Cities

Experts from the Nigerian Institute of Structural Engineers, led by Olushola Sanni, have raised concerns about Nigeria's susceptibility to earthquakes, particularly in major cities such as Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, and Benin City. Despite being classified as a low seismic risk zone, Sanni warns that the absence of significant earthquakes in recent years should not lead to complacency.

Many buildings across Nigeria have been constructed without adequate engineering oversight to withstand seismic forces, exposing residents to potential danger. The institute plans to introduce new guidelines for earthquake-resistant building design by April 16, 2026, aimed at aligning Nigeria's construction practices with global safety standards.

Sanni emphasized that cities situated on soft soil, like Lagos and Ibadan, could experience intensified ground shaking. He also noted that neighboring Ghana has faced severe earthquakes, indicating that seismic energy extends into southwestern Nigeria.

The proposed guidelines will simplify engineering procedures and promote safer structural designs.
