Nigerians Struggle as Fuel Prices Soar to N1,450/Liter

Nigerians are increasingly burdened by rising fuel prices, which have led to transportation costs consuming over 80% of their income. The price of petrol has escalated to between N1,300 and N1,450 per liter, while diesel approaches N2,000 per liter.

This surge is attributed to global oil price movements and currency fluctuations, resulting in a 40% increase in fuel expenses. Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, warns of the ripple effects of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East on energy prices, which could further exacerbate economic hardship.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for urgent government intervention as fears grow over inflation, job losses, and business closures due to these price hikes. Commuters and workers, particularly in satellite towns around Abuja, report spending significant portions of their salaries on transportation, with some civil servants spending nearly their entire earnings just to commute to work.

The situation is described as unprecedented in recent history, with calls for decisive action from the government.
