Weak Opposition and Candidate Imposition Threaten Democracy

Amobi Nzelu, Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers in Abuja, expressed concerns about the state of Nigeria's democracy, attributing its crisis to the failure of opposition parties to unite and the imposition of candidates within political parties. He noted that political parties, originally meant to sponsor credible candidates, now often allow the highest bidder to become the flag bearer instead of the primary election winner.

Nzelu described this practice as a "weapon of mass destruction" for Nigeria's politics and warned that it could lead to a one-party system. He emphasized that the desperation in politics is linked to unemployment and poverty, suggesting that becoming a flag bearer is seen as a quick route to wealth.

Nzelu also commented on the Nigeria Democratic Congress, urging its leaders to ensure justice and internal democracy. He criticized the All Progressives Congress for lacking credible opposition and called for accountability among leaders, stating that governance should not be viewed as a means to steal.
