Cardinal Onaiyekan Urges Better Governance from Presidency

Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, announced that the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has concluded its discussions with the Presidency and is now focused on the government's actions regarding the concerns raised. This statement followed a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, where the bishops assessed the country's economic and security situations.

During an interview on Frontline, Onaiyekan dismissed the need for the bishops to engage in a public dispute with government spokespersons, emphasizing that their intervention was not solely for Catholic interests but a moral obligation to address issues affecting all Nigerians. He noted that the bishops had waited several months for the meeting with President Tinubu, which was not intended to promote the Catholic faith but to express their views on governance.

Onaiyekan expressed hope for ongoing engagement with the Federal Government on matters impacting Nigerians.
