West African Ministers Commit to Women's Political Leadership

At the West Africa Women’s Political Leadership Forum in Abuja, West African ministers pledged to enhance women's political participation in line with ECOWAS’ 2035 gender parity target. Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized the need for actionable commitments beyond mere symbolism.

The forum focused on implementing the ECOWAS 2035 gender parity agenda, sustainable financing for women, and ensuring zero tolerance for violence against women in politics. ECOWAS Vice-President Damtien L.

Tchintchibidja stressed the importance of developing a regional roadmap and establishing mechanisms to measure progress. Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr Isata Mahoi, highlighted the impact of legislative reforms on women's participation.

Liberia’s Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Gbeme Horace-Kollie, identified campaign financing as a significant barrier and proposed equitable distribution of campaign funds. Bineta Diop from the African Women Leaders Network called for accountability and mentorship from established women leaders.
