U.S. Imposes Visa Ban on Nigerians Violating Religious Freedom

The U.S. government has announced the enforcement of new visa restrictions targeting individuals from Nigeria who have been found guilty of violating religious freedom. This policy was disclosed by a principal advisor on global religious freedom following a statement from Secretary Rubio.

The U.S. State Department will restrict visas under section 212 (3)(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows for immediate visa restrictions on individuals and their family members who are involved in religious persecution.

This decision follows a rise in religious violence in Nigeria, particularly against Christians, and comes after a public hearing held by the U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa.

The hearing reviewed the designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern, which could lead to sanctions against Nigerian officials complicit in religious persecution. The U.S. aims to ensure that those responsible for such violations are not welcomed into the country.
