INEC Delists David Mark's ADC Amid Leadership Dispute

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on September 2, 2025, the delisting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark due to ongoing leadership disputes. Mark's faction, loyal to him, is engaged in a legal battle to regain control of the party, which has been complicated by a court appeal.

INEC stated that it would revert to the status quo pending the outcome of the federal high court's decision in Abuja. Mark's faction, represented by Nafiu Bala Gomb, has accused INEC of misinterpreting court rulings and acting under government pressure to weaken opposition parties.

Prominent political figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have called for the resignation of INEC Chairman Josiah Amupitan, citing a loss of confidence in the commission's ability to conduct credible elections. INEC's response, delivered by Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola, dismissed calls for Amupitan's removal as distractions from its independent electoral duties.
