Atiku Warns Low Voter Turnout Threatens Nigerian Democracy

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, reacted to the low voter turnout recorded during the FCT area council elections, which averaged below 20%. He emphasized that when votes do not count, democracy is at risk.

Atiku attributed the low participation to a toxic political environment characterized by intimidation and a systematic weakening of opposition voices. He warned that the decline in civic participation poses a long-term threat to Nigeria's democratic foundations.

Atiku called on opposition parties to set aside partisan differences and unite to safeguard democracy, stressing that citizens losing faith in the electoral process is a significant danger. He highlighted that the current administration's actions have contributed to this decline, creating an atmosphere where dissent is targeted and alternative political views are seen as threats.
