White House Backs Argentina Players Over Falklands Banner

The White House expressed support for the Argentine players who unfurled a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”) during post-match celebrations after their victory over England in the FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday. This display has led to calls for FIFA to investigate whether it violated rules against political slogans during matches.

Andrew Giuliani, chief of the White House FIFA Task Force, stated that the players were justified in expressing their views on U.S. soil, citing First Amendment rights. In contrast, a spokesman for Downing Street confirmed the UK's support for FIFA's involvement, reiterating the UK's sovereignty over the disputed Falkland Islands.

The Falkland Islands Government also requested FIFA to take action against the display, emphasizing that "Politics has no place in sport." Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel supported the players via a Twitter message echoing their sentiment. FIFA has yet to respond to the ongoing controversy.
