First Ebola Recovery Confirmed in DRC Outbreak

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on May 27 that a patient has made the first confirmed recovery from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The patient, identified by Anai Legand, was discharged from the hospital after two negative laboratory tests.

Legand expressed hope for further recoveries among individuals who have not yet received laboratory confirmation of their test results. As of the announcement, the DRC outbreak, declared on May 15, has recorded 125 confirmed cases and 223 suspected cases, with a total of 17 confirmed deaths.

The outbreak is attributed to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has a known case fatality rate of 50 percent. However, the current outbreak's case fatality rate appears to be below 25 percent.

Legand emphasized that early access to care significantly improves survival rates and expressed optimism for more recoveries.
