Nigeria Urged to Boost Funding for TB Response Efforts

Roberto Taboada, head of Anglo West Africa, urged the Nigerian government to increase funding for tuberculosis (TB) response efforts during a statement made on Tuesday, commemorating World Tuberculosis Day 2026. He highlighted the country's progress in strengthening its TB response but noted a significant 15% spike in reported TB cases since 2020.

Taboada emphasized that TB remains a pressing public health challenge in Nigeria, despite ongoing efforts to improve detection and treatment. He called for greater coordination and integration within the healthcare system to enhance the performance of existing laboratories and support multiple disease areas.

Taboada advocated for a more efficient and scalable diagnostic approach, leveraging existing infrastructure to increase testing volumes. He noted that engaging the public and private sectors is crucial for designing sustainable TB testing solutions.

Taboada expressed optimism that Nigerian policymakers are beginning to focus on efficient solutions that align with national TB program goals.
