WHO Calls for Enhanced Safety in NCD Patient Care

On World Patient Safety Day, WHO Regional Director Janabi called for enhanced safety measures for patients with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and chronic respiratory conditions. He noted that NCDs resulted in at least 43 million deaths globally in 2021, with the WHO African Region accounting for 37 percent of all deaths in 2019, an increase from 24 percent in 2000.

Janabi identified risks including delayed or missed diagnoses, medication errors, and poor communication during referrals. He stressed the importance of improving access to NCD services alongside safety and quality enhancements, advocating for stronger primary health care systems.

Janabi urged countries to strengthen reporting systems for harm and invest in health worker training and supervision. He emphasized the need for health workers to adhere to evidence-based protocols and for patients to engage actively in their care.

The WHO will continue to support African countries in strengthening primary health care and improving NCD service quality and safety.
