Nigeria's Health Minister Pate Advocates for Patient Safety

On World Patient Safety Day 2026, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, addressed the importance of ensuring safe, quality, and coordinated healthcare for patients in Nigeria, particularly those living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The event took place in Abuja, aligning with the global theme “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases” and the slogan “Safe care for life!” Pate noted that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare had developed the National Patient Safety and Care Quality Policy and Implementation Strategy in 2024.

Furthermore, in 2026, the ministry established the National Task Force on Clinical Governance and Patient Safety, which is tasked with creating a national framework aimed at enhancing governance, accountability, quality improvement, monitoring, and patient safety practices across health institutions in Nigeria.
