Unions Picket Air Peace Over Alleged Debt and Membership

Aviation industry unions have initiated picketing against Air Peace, Nigeria's largest airline, in Lagos and Abuja, citing two main reasons: the alleged refusal of Air Peace workers to join unions and an alleged debt owed to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) regarding the five percent Ticket Sales Charge (TSC). Captain Chris Najomo, the Director-General of the NCAA, stated that an agreement had been reached for settling outstanding debts among all airlines, raising questions about why Air Peace is specifically targeted.

Records indicate that Air Peace has paid billions in Ticket Charges last year and continues to pay significant amounts this year. The airline argues that if the dispute is between the NCAA and airlines, it should not involve unions acting as debt collectors.

Additionally, Air Peace workers have expressed satisfaction with their management, enjoying benefits and asserting their right to choose union membership. Comrade Aminu Suleiman emphasized that joining a union should not be forced upon employees.
