Iranian Women's Soccer Team Granted Asylum in Australia

Five members of the Iranian women's soccer team, who were in Australia for a tournament when the war in Iran began, have been granted asylum. The announcement was made by Australia's Home Affairs Minister, Toni Burk, who confirmed that the women made their asylum request after a public display of solidarity outside their hotel.

The team drew attention when players did not sing the Iranian national anthem during their first match. Naghmeh Danai, a member of the Iranian-Australian community, visited the women to reassure them about their asylum offer.

Burk emphasized that the players are not political activists and expressed the difficulty of their decision, considering their families back in Iran. The Iranian Football Federation has requested an international review of the situation, warning that political interference could disrupt the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

The team, which faced elimination from the tournament, is now in a safe location in Australia.
