Lagos Expands Environmental Infrastructure Amid Growth

Lagos is experiencing significant changes in its infrastructure definition due to rapid population growth, development pressures, and climate change. The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is focusing on environmental systems such as drainage, waste management, and pollution control as essential components of the city's infrastructure.

In October 2025, state officials estimated that Lagos generates between 13,000 and 14,000 tonnes of waste daily, necessitating a comprehensive waste management system that includes collection, transportation, sorting, recycling, and landfill management. The shift towards a circular economy emphasizes waste recovery and recycling, transforming refuse into valuable resources.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority reported an increase in recycling companies from three to 78, creating over 6,000 jobs. This approach not only addresses waste management challenges but also promotes economic activities through the conversion of waste into energy and compost.
