Ycee Discusses Challenges in Bipolar Treatment in Nigeria

Nigerian rapper Ycee, known as Oludemilad Martin Alejo, disclosed in an interview with Aris TV that he was unable to continue his bipolar disorder treatment upon returning to Nigeria. He received his diagnosis in June 2020 while in London and has been battling the condition for six years.

Ycee highlighted the challenges he faced in accessing mental health care in Nigeria, citing a lack of qualified mental health personnel as a significant barrier to continuing his treatment. He noted that upon relocating, he encountered difficulties in finding appropriate care and had to visit different hospitals.

Ycee emphasized that mental health issues received little public attention in Nigeria compared to the UK, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. He plans to continue his treatment in Lagos but expressed frustration over the shortage of specialists in Nigeria's mental healthcare system.

Ycee also addressed the stigma surrounding mental illness in Nigeria, stating that many people dismiss depression as a "big man's disease.".
