IBB Explains Inability to Save Mamman Vatsa from Execution

Former military president Ibrahim Babangida, in an interview marking his 85th birthday, discussed the execution of his close friend Mamman Vatsa, who was convicted in 1985 for allegedly plotting to overthrow Babangida's government. Vatsa, then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, was accused alongside Mohammed Gado Nasko.

Babangida expressed initial disbelief at the allegations due to their long-standing friendship and military camaraderie. After a senior military officer informed him of their involvement, Babangida summoned both men, who denied the accusations.

A military commission of inquiry was established, which cleared Nasko but found evidence against Vatsa. Babangida described his shock and disappointment at the findings but stated that military law left him unable to intervene.

Consequently, Vatsa was executed by firing squad in March 1986. Babangida lamented the loss of his friend, referring to him as a brother.
