Mourinho Reveals Why He Turned Down Man United Job

In a new Netflix documentary series about his career, Jose Mourinho disclosed that he had agreed to become the manager of Manchester United in 2013 after leaving Real Madrid. He was set to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson but ultimately decided to return to Chelsea, where he had previously won two Premier League titles.

Mourinho expressed that he felt flattered by the opportunity at Manchester United but prioritized his emotional connection to Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Mourinho had initially accepted the role, but after a heartfelt conversation, Mourinho decided against it, stating, “I’ve given my word to Chelsea and I’m not going to break my word.” Mourinho returned to Chelsea in 2013, winning his third Premier League title and the League Cup.

He later took charge of Manchester United in 2016, winning the League Cup and Europa League before being dismissed in December 2018.
