Jonathan's 2027 Presidential Bid Ineligible, Says Lawyer

Kayode Oladel, a former Ogun lawmaker and constitutional lawyer, asserted that Goodluck Jonathan is ineligible to contest in the 2027 presidential election. He referenced Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that a person who has completed a presidential term cannot be elected to that office again.

Oladel explained that this provision was deliberately included to prevent potential loopholes in Nigeria's presidential tenure framework. He noted that Jonathan's rise to power in May 2010, following the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua, placed him within the category of individuals affected by this constitutional clause.

Oladel further clarified that the 2018 constitutional amendment does not retroactively affect Jonathan's prior service and does not allow for a return to the presidency. He warned political parties considering Jonathan's candidacy for 2027 of the legal uncertainties and potential reputational damage that could arise from such a move.
