Retired Colonel Urges Overhaul of Nigeria's Security Strategy

Retired Colonel Usman addressed the vulnerability of Nigerian security forces to ambushes following an incident in which gunmen killed no fewer than 11 soldiers and police officers in the Giro Masa community, Shanga Local Government Area, Kebbi State. In a statement issued on Thursday, Usman described the attack as a grim reminder of the urgent need to overhaul Nigeria's security strategy.

He emphasized that the attacks reflect a real challenge, as security forces continue to rely on traditional military tactics against highly unconventional enemies. Usman explained that terrorist groups and bandits have evolved their operations, adopting guerrilla warfare tactics that exploit their knowledge of local terrain, often outmaneuvering conventional military formats.

He urged the federal government to review and recalibrate its security strategy, suggesting the establishment of special units trained for unconventional warfare. Usman also stressed the importance of unified joint operations among security agencies and the need for increased investment in modern surveillance technologies to enhance intelligence-led operations.
