Umeh Defends Official Vehicle Allocation for Lawmakers

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, defended the provision of official vehicles for members of the National Assembly during a political platform discussion. He stated that lawmakers require these vehicles to effectively carry out their responsibilities and criticized the notion that they should "trek to work." Umeh argued that it is unfair to criticize lawmakers for having access to official vehicles, as members of the executive branch also have fleets of vehicles.

He emphasized that the National Assembly operates with a single official vehicle and does not abuse public resources. Umeh's comments came in response to a recent court victory for the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), which questioned the vehicle procurement scheme and alleged excess salaries for federal lawmakers.

He maintained that the National Assembly's financial structure is subject to proper scrutiny and audit.
