Ayra Starr's Visa Denial Explained by South African Envoy

Ayra Starr was denied a visa to South Africa because her team submitted an incorrect yellow fever certificate, according to Prof. Bobby Moroe, the South African Consul-General to Nigeria. This incident occurred in February 2024 and was not a recent event, contrary to some reports.

Moroe clarified that the certificate submitted was from another country instead of Nigeria, her home country. He emphasized that the decision was not targeted at Ayra Starr or Nigerian nationals, as visa applications are evaluated based on compliance with South African immigration requirements.

The matter was resolved after South African officials communicated the necessary requirements to her team, leading to the issuance of a one-year visa for her to perform in South Africa in 2024. Moroe also stated that celebrity status does not influence visa decisions, and all applicants are subject to the same immigration rules.

He dismissed claims that South Africa had tightened entry restrictions on Nigerians, noting an increase in visa applications from Nigeria.
