EFCC Delays Charges Against El-Rufai Amid Investigations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that it has not yet charged former Governor Nasir El-Rufai to court as investigations into corruption allegations are still ongoing. El-Rufai was taken into custody by the EFCC on February 16, 2023, and held until February 18, 2023, when he was released on administrative bail.

Sources close to the commission indicated that the EFCC is not rushing to court with the allegations, as they aim to conduct a thorough and professional investigation. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is also involved, having taken El-Rufai into custody after his release from the EFCC.

His lawyer has not received a response regarding a bail application submitted to the ICPC. The commission has not shown a remand order authorizing continued detention, despite the expiration of the 48-hour constitutional window for holding a person without charge.
