Wike Backs August 30 Rivers Local Government Elections

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike expressed support for the upcoming local government elections in the state on August 30, despite opposition from various stakeholders, including former Governor Celestine Omehia and other prominent figures. They petitioned President Bola Tinubu, calling the elections unconstitutional due to procedural breaches.

Wike defended the elections, stating that the eminent individuals opposing them were misguided. He also criticized the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, for his remarks about Tinubu and claimed that Lawal was overlooked for the vice presidential position in 2023.

Additionally, Wike dismissed former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi's presidential ambitions, stating that Amaechi's bid is futile and that he lacks the ability to fight corruption effectively. Wike emphasized the importance of local government elections and vowed to campaign for candidates in the upcoming polls.
