NUJ Demands Apology from Wike Over Controversial Remarks

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over a statement made by Minister Nyesom Wike during a media chat, which they believe could threaten press freedom in Nigeria. The NUJ has urged Wike to clarify and withdraw his comment, which they argue could implicate the safety of journalists.

Following Wike's remarks, which were made in response to an analysis by Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi on a television program, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Lere Olayinka, described the comments as hyperbolic and taken out of context. Despite this clarification, the NUJ insists that public officials should exercise caution when addressing issues involving the media, as journalists are not enemies of the state.

The union has called on the federal government to reaffirm its commitment to protecting journalists and ensuring they can perform their duties without fear. The NUJ also appealed to media organizations and civil society groups to support efforts to safeguard freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.
