Windstorm Destroys 179 Houses in Edo Communities, Displacing Thousands

A windstorm and rainstorm have caused significant destruction in three communities in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, affecting Erok, Attakpame, Ukwa, Erekpa, and Okagba. The disaster struck on February 1, 2026, at 5 pm, impacting 179 houses and displacing 2,022 people.

NEMA, in collaboration with the Edo State Emergency Management Agency, conducted a joint assessment to ascertain the extent of the damage. The assessment revealed that 337 households were affected, with vulnerable victims, particularly women and children, seeking refuge in neighboring communities.

The disaster also damaged critical infrastructure, including 12 electricity poles, trees, schools, and healthcare centers. NEMA described the level of destruction as severe, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

The affected communities require immediate support to address the aftermath of the disaster.
