UN Report: Women Hold Only 64% of Men's Legal Rights

According to a report released by the United Nations, women around the world currently hold only 64% of the legal rights available to men. The report highlights that despite decades of advocacy and policy reform aimed at improving women's rights, legal systems in many countries continue to restrict freedoms and fail to adequately protect women and girls from abuse and discrimination.

António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasized the need for equal laws and investment in women and girls to build a better and fairer world. The report warns that women and girls face serious legal barriers that expose them to abuse and injustice, particularly as the environment surrounding sexual violence has reportedly worsened, with rape often used as a weapon of war.

The findings come ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, which aims to celebrate women's achievements and draw attention to the ongoing challenges they face globally.
