Bauchi Healthcare Chief Reports High Unplanned Pregnancies

During a media briefing on the 2026 World Contraception Day in Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Board, revealed that unplanned pregnancies are more frequent among married women than unmarried women in the state. Represented by Dr Safiyan Jibrin, the Director of Primary Health, Mohammed highlighted the significance of contraception in enabling couples to plan their pregnancies.

He noted that many women seek to terminate unplanned pregnancies, which are more common in marital homes. Mohammed reiterated that abortion is legally restricted in Nigeria, permitted only when the mother's life is at risk.

He urged residents to utilize family planning and contraceptive services available at local healthcare facilities, many of which are free. Pharmacist Nufin-Allah Alhamdul, representing the Society for Family Health, mentioned their partnership with the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Board and other stakeholders to promote contraception and family planning, emphasizing the benefits of effective family planning for families and communities.
