Kwara State Intensifies Fight Against Leprosy on World Leprosy Day

Kwara State, Nigeria, under the leadership of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, is ramping up efforts to combat leprosy and tackle associated stigma on World Leprosy Day. The State Ministry of Health, represented by Saad Hamdalat and Dr.

Taohe Abdullahi, emphasizes the importance of eliminating leprosy and addressing misconceptions. Despite leprosy being curable with multi-drug therapy, stigma and misinformation persist, leading to late presentations and disabilities.

The government is committed to early detection, community engagement, and providing free treatment. Dr.

Oluwatosin Fakayode ensures inclusive healthcare delivery, including for inmates. The state collaborates with the Nigerian Correctional Service to offer free medical screenings and treatment.

Efforts include training healthcare workers, distributing informational materials, and conducting awareness campaigns to reduce disability cases. The observance of World Leprosy Day aims to promote early treatment and eliminate discrimination against those affected by the disease.
