NLC Urges Government to Increase Education Funding and Improve Teacher Welfare in Nigeria

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) marked World Teachers’ Day by demanding better pay and increased funding for education in Nigeria. The NLC called on the Federal Government to allocate at least six percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 20 percent of public expenditure to education to improve teacher welfare and education quality.

The NLC President emphasized the importance of investing in education infrastructure and human capital development, particularly in training and motivating teachers. The neglect of the teaching profession was highlighted as a threat to Nigeria's future, leading to teacher shortages and declining education standards.

The NLC urged government ministers to enforce laws protecting the rights of teachers, including the right to union representation.
